Hakim Mohammed Said Hamdard Foundation Pakistan

Life is love, Life is service

Founder – Hakim Mohammed Said (1920-1998)

“Service to humanity is one of the noblest attributes a man can acquire”. This was what motivated Hakim Mohammed Said’s father Hakim Abdul Majeed to establish Hamdard in Delhi in 1906 and work hard for its success so that he could make it a ‘waqf’. He was not destined to do so in his lifetime but his wife Rabia Begum and sons Hakim Abdul Hameed and Hakim Mohammed Said made Hamdard a ‘waqf’ in 1946. After partition, Hakim Mohammed Said decided to come to Pakistan. He had very little money but he had valuable assets — his enthusiasm; his wish to undertake noble works and to endeavour to usher in the golden era of Islamic revival, especially in the field of Eastern Medicine.

Hakim Said established Hamdard Dawakhana in Karachi in 1948 in a modest way. However, by 1953, the profits had risen favorably and he decided to make Hamdard Dawakhana into a ‘waqf’. His days of adversity were over. Hakim Said possessed innumerable qualities of head and heart and had a vivid imagination. He realised that it was becoming difficult for Hamdard (Waqf) to manage the business as well as the charitable and welfare activities and therefore he decided to establish Hamdard Foundation to look after the humanitarian affairs of Hamdard. In one of his books he says, “Wealth is that sticky smog which destroys the luster of the soul for ever — thus he endowed all the profits of Hamdard (Waqf) to Hamdard Foundation to carry out its charitable, educational and other philanthropic activities”.

Date of Establishment

Hamdard Dawakhana was established in Karachi in 1948. It was declared Hamdard Laboratories (Waqf) Pakistan in 1953. A lot of philanthropic activities were initiated and completed by Waqf from 1953 to 1968. Since then Hamdard Foundation Pakistan involved in various types of philanthropic activities. Expansions are being made in these activities rapidly and systematically.
