Hakim Mohammed Said Madinat al-Hikmah

Life is love, Life is service

Madinat al-Hikmah is situated at the outskirts of Karachi some 40 km.from the city centre. This self-contained City of Education, Science and Culture is spread over an area of 350 acres. When Madinat al-Hikmah was established, the vicinity was underdeveloped and no basic facilities were available. Therefore a lot of effort was made by Hamdard in order to establish basic infrastructure such as roads, electricity, water and gas supply and telephone service. A huge amount has been spent on these facilities.

Madinat al-Hikmah is the name of an endeavor for the revival of those values and traditional efforts in education, science and research, which are our cultural bequests. Its objectives, as outlined by the founder Shaheed Hakim Mohammed Said’ are:

  • To create a city of culture and learning in Pakistan in accordance with the universal teachings where the most faithful (Marde Momin) and the noblest men would create and nourish civilization and culture reflecting universal peace and the highest virtues of nobility and truth.
  • To establish, develop and administer such seats of education and training which are based on the. strong and cogent pillars of the oneness of Allah, Prophethood of the Last Prophet (p.b.u.h.)’ the Day of Judgment and humanity so- as to enlighten the world with universal knowledge and wisdom.
  • To derive and deduce light from all sources of human culture, civilization and world history and create institutions similar to Bait al-Hikmah, Baghdad and the like. We expect, that Madinat al Hikmah be given the status of a educational nucleus, where not only scholars from the world of Islam but experts from the entire world should follow their academic pursuits. Although this city is located on the soil of Pakistan, our endeavor should be to make it an international city of knowledge and wisdom.

Besides other institutions of knowledge and education such as Bait al Hikmah Library, Hamdard School & College, Hamdard University is also a part of Madinat al Hikmah.

Past and Present

Hamdard University was established on October 9, 1991 by an act of the Provincial Assembly of Sindh. Shaheed Hakim Mohammad Said, the founder-Chancellor of the University received its charter in a solemn ceremony by the hands of the President of Pakistan Ghulam Ishaq Khan. For the university an area of about 178 acres was earmarked at Madinat al-Hikmah, a prospective city of education, science and culture, 30 km North to the commercial center of Karachi. Stretching over an area of 350 acres, Madinat al-Hikmah includes in addition to the institutions of the university, Hamdard Garden, sport stadium, Hamdard Public School and college, operating as its earliest institutions, Bait al-Hikmah Library, imparting education from primary to higher secondary level.

Institute of Education & Social Sciences (HIESS) and College of Eastern Medicine (HACEM) were among the earliest institutions, established after its inception. The other institutions that appeared in the later stages of its development include Hamdard College of Medicine & Dentistry (HCM&D), Hamdard Institute of Management Sciences (HIMS), Hamdard Institute of Information Technology (HIIT), Hafiz Mohammad Ilyas Institute of Pharmacology & Herbal Sciences, Hamdard School of Law (HSL), Hamdard Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences (HIPS), Bait al-Hikmah Research Institute and Regional CISCO Networking Academy. In addition to this process of institutional multiplication, which is continuously going on, the growth of the university, in terms of the extension of its services to an increased public, has been regular. In 1996 the first city campus of the university was established at Adamjee Nagar. Later on two more city campuses, operating both weekend and evening programs were started in the localities of Clifton and Karsaz. The number of campuses increased with the establishment of Islamabad and Faisalabad campuses in 1998 and 2000 respectively. During the period, five, Lahore, Islamabad and Karachi based organizations, imparting professional education in different disciplines, also got affiliated to the university.

The history of the academic programs, offered during the period by the constituent institutions, presents a brilliant picture of regular growth and extension. The University, starting its journey with a couple of programs in 1992, is now offering almost 40 programs ranging from certificate courses to post graduate studies, in the disciplines of education, legal studies, eastern medicine, health sciences, pharmacy, and management, technological and information sciences.

The enrollment in these programs has also been on constant increase. This fact manifests itself in the number of degree-holders in the five consecutive convocations held till 2001. In these convocations 250, 260, 502, 692 and 810 students received degrees respectively. The number of students, who are going to pass out in the convocation of 2002, is estimated to be around 1100, making the average rate of per annum increase in enrollment to be about 35%. The total number of students enrolled in the different programs of the university is about 10,000.

These eleven years of Hamdard University are also the eleven years of financial stability and continuous growth. Starting from a rather weak and dependent economic situation, the University has now established itself as a financially sound organization, continuously growing both in terms of resources and volume. The number of teaching and non-teaching employees working in the different institutes and departments of the University is an indicator in this regard. The number of employees has now crossed the figure of one thousand and is on further increase.

The development process of the University is thus progressing on all the various levels with quite an unparalleled rapidity. Newer branches in the form of faculties, campuses, institutes and departments being continuously sprouting and developing, the University has already acquired the position of a large-size organization and is likely to maintain its brilliant career in future.

Education and Research in the field of law are matters of prime importance for the development of the culture of the rule of law in the country. Unfortunately, legal education has not been accorded the required importance and priority up till now.

At the time of the creation of Pakistan in 1947, there were hardly three or four law colleges in the country. Gradually the number grew appreciably but the standard of education deteriorated. In the absence of a full-time faculty and full-time educational and research facility, the law schools lack quality of education, as there is no system of tutorials, class discussions, research assignments and personalized attention. Realizing the urgent need for a center of excellence for law, Hamdard University has established a full-time school of Law at Karachi with a commitment to excellence in both teaching and research. Initially, the Law School is providing legal studies graduate course, leading to the degree of LLB based on the syllabus approved by the Pakistan Bar Council.

The institute, established in 1999 at Islamabad Campus offers courses, culminating on the degree of Bachelors of Pharmacy (B. Pharm). The program, designed by the institute, aims at preparing the students to take a wide variety of jobs associated with pharmacy in hospitals, industries, government services and private businesses. The institute has established excellent laboratories in Pharmaceutical Chemistry and Pharmaceutics, which are equipped with equipments and machines, latest in the field. The institute is developing itself to offer in future postgraduate programs leading to M. Phil and Ph.D. degrees

Along the left side of the University Road, beside NED and Karachi universities, the grand building of the institute offers an awe-inspiring sight. As an institute accredited by Pakistan Engineering Council, UIT gives an opportunity of high quality education in the different disciplines of Engineering and Computer Science with its morning and evening Programs. Sophisticated labs, modern classrooms, up-to-date libraries and a highly qualified faculty combine to make the institute one of the best among the private institutions.

The CISCO Regional Academy model is dependent on a “trainer of trainers” design that provides for two types of training. The first type of training is for those learners, who will be instructing others to conduct training. The second type of training is for instructors who will be teaching students to become Networking Associate and Design Associates.
